Breast Cancer Awareness

If a woman gets breast cancer, what are the survival rates? If a breast cancer is in-situ or noninvasive, the survival rate is close to 100 percent. If it is confined to the breast, the 5-year survival can be over 95 percent. The chances of survival greatly improve if the cancer is detected early and is small and has not spread to other parts of the body.
Have you scheduled your mammogram?
The American Cancer Society recommends monthly breast self-exams beginning as a woman reaches her twenties; clinical breast exams should be done at least every three years from 20–39 years of age and then on an annual basis from age 40. A baseline mammogram should be obtained in women age 35–40 and followed by annual screenings beginning at 40 years old. If you are at an increased risk for breast cancer due to family history, genetic tendency, past breast cancer, etc., please talk with your doctor about the benefits and limitations of starting testing earlier, having additional tests, or having more frequent exams.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Approximately one in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. The good news is that early detection of breast cancer increases the chance of survival dramatically. The five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 98% for those persons whose cancer has not spread beyond the breast at the time of diagnosis.
